Forum Centre at Wythenshawe is offering free gym passes for teenage girls across the local community, to support the health and wellbeing of this target age group.
The initiative responds to recent research of 40,000 teenagers across Greater Manchester which revealed teenage girls exercise less than boys, making them ‘less happy, rested and active’.
Managed by leisure operator Everyone Active, in partnership with Wythenshawe Trust, Manchester City Council and MCR Active, Forum Leisure at the Wythenshawe Forum, will offer a free seven day pass for girls aged 11-15 years old.
in partnership with Wythenshawe Trust and MCR Active, the Forum Centre at Wythenshawe, will offer a free seven day pass for girls aged 11-15 years old.
The pass will provide local teenagers with a Junior Fitness Membership, giving access to the centre’s state-of-the-art gym and swim facilities, and junior group fitness classes.
Alongside a lack of exercise, the study also discovered teenage girls sleep less than boys, and are three times as likely to report struggling with their mental health.
Philip Bowers, Everyone Active’s contract manager, said: “We’re aware of the gender gap in sports, specifically amongst this age range in Manchester, and are keen to combat this by giving teenage girls an opportunity to engage with different sports.
“Whether its utilising the cardio gym equipment, swimming pool or sports hall for badminton – we offer a wide range of activities and want to encourage these girls to come down and try out different sports.
“We hope that by breaking down the barriers to participation, they will find an activity they really enjoy and continue to pursue it, improving their health and wellbeing long term.”
To redeem the seven day pass, which runs until 30 June, customers must complete the form here: https://survey.eacommunications.co.uk/home/index?id=1879&newsession=1
